Love Hemp directors Tony Calamita and Tom Rowland, along with Business Development manager Jerome Campbell, made their way to Manchester on Saturday night to support Love Hemp sponsored athlete Jack McGann in his first boxing bout against Midlands middleweight Dwain Grant.
The half-Irish Liverpool born fighter, made his debut in the boxing ring after posing a formidable record in Mixed Martial Arts. McGann has been sparring with world-class boxers for years, as well as fighting against top level boxers in Russia, so the challenge of switching codes was never going to be a difficult transition.
McGann’s move into boxing brings back memories of Conor McGregor’s foray into the sport last August, and McGann clearly used McGregor’s experience as somewhat of an inspiration as he had the Dubliner’s renowned striking coach Owen Roddy in his corner.
McGann’s debut had originally been set to come on May 19th after Hall of Fame promoter snapped up McGann in January, but this was pushed back by 3 weeks after the date of Tyson Fury’s comeback was announced. It was a huge stage for McGann to make his debut on, performing on the Tyson Fury card in front of a capacity crowd at the Manchester Arena.
The waiting had clearly got to McGann as he flew out of the traps early on, hitting Grant with big hits to his body, while also forcing the Midlander to throw air punches in the opening rounds.
The Pilgrim continued his strong start of life in the ring in the 2nd round, knocking Dwain Grant to the floor twice and leaving him visibly shaken. McGann had all the momentum behind him, and his dominance over his opponent lead to the referee stopping the fight in shortly into the 3rd.
