The Comprehensive Guide to Baking with CBD

If you have recently discovered the wellness-promoting effects of CBD and you are looking for new ways to incorporate it into your day-to-day routine, it might be time to try baking with CBD. Although the idea of it may be daunting, it is a fun, relaxing, and tasty way to get your daily dosage of CBD!

What Are the Benefits of Baking with CBD?

CBD baked goods are just another way of enjoying the myriad of benefits that CBD has to offer. For instance, the compound has been known to support muscle recovery, stress relief, and promote better sleep. For many, baking was a therapeutic outlet during COVID-induced national lockdowns. With the addition of CBD oil, baking could allow you to tap into a variety of new health and wellness benefits, especially if you opt for healthier ingredients and less sugar.

Notably, when you infuse CBD with food, it will take you longer to feel its effects. This is because anything that you digest must pass through your gut and liver before reaching your bloodstream. Although it is not as quick-acting, this also means that the effects of edibles can last up to 4 hours longer than other types of CBD products.

How to Use CBD Oil in Baking?

For optimal CBD absorption, it is best to infuse CBD with a fatty base ingredient (e.g., oil or butter) before adding it to the rest of your ingredients and baking. According to a study by the University of Minnesota in 2019, CBD exposure is massively increased when CBD is taken with high fatty foods. This is because CBD is fat-soluble, and therefore your body absorbs it best when paired with fat-containing foods.

When baking with CBD oil, there is also a range of other factors that must be considered:

High temperatures can destroy the active compounds in CBD and can also cause the CBD added to your recipe to evaporate. Given that the boiling point of the substance is between 160 and 180°C, we recommend that you set your oven to 160°C or below when baking with CBD to avoid losing the health and wellness benefits provided.

If you are planning to use CBD in baking, you will need to consider the amount that you should use. CBD dosage recommendations ultimately depend upon the tolerance of the person. Anyone new to CBD should start small, perhaps between 5 to 10mg. Meanwhile, someone who is more familiar with CBD might aim to make brownies each with 25mg of CBD in them.

You will have to carefully think about serving size when you are cooking with CBD oil. If you want to make 20 brownies each with 25mg of CBD in them, for example, remember you will have to put 500mg of CBD oil into your mixture.

CBD is highly sensitive to light and heat. As a result, your CBD baked goods should be stored in an airtight container and kept in a dark, cool place to ensure they stay fresh and maintain their quality.

We offer a range of different flavoured CBD oils, including peppermint, cherry, and orange. Especially if you are not used to the natural, earthy flavour of CBD oil yet, you may opt to bake with flavoured oils.

Whilst flavour is entirely based on personal preference, you will need to consider whether your flavoured CBD oil will pair well with whatever you plan on baking. For example, we suggested using Love Hemp’s Wild Cherry CBD oil in our CBD pancakes recipe. Meanwhile, you may use drops of Love Hemp’s Valencia Orange CBD oil if you are making dark chocolate cookies. Remember, there are no strict guidelines on this – feel free to experiment!
