What is the difference between CBD full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate?
Before we delve into the many reasons why THC-free CBD products are the best choice, we would like to take a moment to explain the different types of CBD extracts available. There are three main types:
- Full Spectrum - full spectrum CBD products contain a selection of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, including THC
- Broad Spectrum (THC-free) - THC-free CBD products contain all the beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids with the exception of THC
- CBD Isolate - CBD isolate contains just CBD
There are many beneficial compounds in high quality CBD products, not just CBD. Therefore when you take CBD isolate you miss out on a lot of the potential benefits associated with hemp.
Full spectrum products include the controlled substance THC, and although they do also offer the properties of other cannabis compounds, the inclusion of THC isn't for everyone. However, broad spectrum (THC-free) CBD products offer the best of both: the added benefits of an array of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, without the potential negative effects of THC.
What does UK legislation say about THC?
THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the primary psychoactive and intoxicating cannabinoid found in cannabis, and is responsible for the feeling of being high.
UK legislation is quite clear about the legal status of THC, although there has been some confusion as many CBD companies misquote hemp growing THC limits (0.2%) with regards to CBD products. UK laws actually state, with certain restrictions, that the maximum permitted amount of THC is 1mg per product.
THC is classed as a controlled substance due to its psychoactive properties. Controlled substances are illegal under The Misuse of Drugs Act, with one exemption. There is a permitted amount that is allowed, and this equates to 1mg in any closed container. 1mg is actually a very small amount, especially when looking at larger product sizes. So even when THC levels are below 0.2%, the amount of THC often exceeds this limit.
This is one of the reasons why we sell only THC-free CBD products - to make sure we offer our customers a CBD range that is 100% legal.
Why choose a THC-free CBD products?
CBD products without THC are a popular choice among users who want to try CBD but have concerns over the inclusion of THC. Typically, this is because they either have concerns about drug testing or have an aversion to the trace amounts of THC in full spectrum products.
Many employees have to undergo drug tests at work. The low levels of THC within many CBD products are not enough to produce any psychoactive effects, but it’s unclear how it may affect a drug screening that tests for THC. So most people want to avoid the risks altogether, especially if their job depends on it.
THC can also be detected in the body much longer than most other drug compounds (up to 20 hours after ingestion), and it's stored in body fat and organs for three to four weeks. Hair follicle testing may identify THC after even longer periods of time, around 90 days.
There are also people who are particularly sensitive to THC even at very low levels, and THC comes with potential adverse effects which many people want to avoid.
